Obama Care First Hand Experience

So, in October I ranted about how crappy the Colorado Health website was and how unprepared for the start-up deadline the state and government were. Out of all fairness I feel the need to add this update. I know I have a lot of Republican friends who are totally against helping people through Obama Care who don’t make enough to pay for mainstream medical insurance so I hope they don’t decide to judge me on my following information. But, so be it.

I have been uninsured for the past 8 years due to the insurance companies considering the Chiropractic induce stroke I had in 2003 as a preexisting condition, even though I had no history of this prior to the injury, and the fact that I have been self-employed for the past 6 years. It turned out to be cheaper to pay the $200 twice a year when I got my bi-annual bronchitis instead of trying to pay the exorbitant premiums. I did H/R for 6 years so I understand that it was a risk to be uninsured if I had a major injury or illness, but I had no choice except to take that risk, and deal with the constant fear and stress this created.

Once the dust cleared with all the ridiculous red tape and non-functioning web-sites I did qualify for Medicaid and as of January 4th I have insurance. I still have not received much information as in literature on what I am covered on, so I’ve not used it until today. I went in for my laryngitis, which turned out to be a sinus infection and bronchitis. In the past 8 years when I’ve gone in to get the same treatment and medication I received today it has cost me between $150 and $200, that is with my doctor giving me a cash discount and using the pharmacy discount card. Today the doctor visit and medication came to $10. For the first time in 8 years I actually feel a weight off of my shoulders about being sick. I am the demographic this plan was meant to help, and I know the Obama Care package is not perfect. But, I am thanking god that there is now something in place to assist people like me. I would not have been able to afford to go to the doctor today had I not had this in place. As much as I hate politics and politicians, I am saying THANK YOU to those individuals who persevered and push through something to help people like me. It may not be perfect or for everyone, but it is a much needed start, and I am eternally grateful.
